Frequently Asked Questions
How often do fire extinguishers need to be inspected?
Fire extinguishers require annual inspection per NFPA 10. Monthly visual checks by the building owner or manager are also recommended. The annual inspection is performed by a licensed technician who checks the pressure gauge, verifies the pull pin and tamper seal, examines the cylinder for damage or corrosion, and confirms the extinguisher is properly mounted and accessible.
What is six-year maintenance on a fire extinguisher?
Every six years, stored-pressure fire extinguishers that use dry chemical or dry powder agents must be emptied, internally examined, and recharged. This is a more thorough inspection than the annual check. The technician opens the cylinder, examines the interior for corrosion or contamination, verifies the valve and stem assembly, and refills with fresh agent.
What is hydrostatic testing and when is it required?
Hydrostatic testing verifies the structural integrity of the cylinder by pressurizing it with water to a specified test pressure. The interval depends on the type of extinguisher: every 5 years for CO2 and water extinguishers, every 12 years for dry chemical extinguishers. The test date, technician, and test pressure are permanently stamped on the cylinder.
How do you use a fire extinguisher?
Remember PASS: Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep side to side. If you have never used one, ask your technician during your next inspection to show you. It is a skill that most people will need at some point in their lives. Read more in our article on how fire extinguishers work.
How long does a fire extinguisher last?
Most fire extinguishers have a service life of 12 years from the date of manufacture, assuming they pass all required maintenance and testing. After 12 years, the cylinder must be hydrostatically tested or replaced. Some types (like certain CO2 extinguishers) have different intervals. Your technician tracks the manufacture date and will advise when replacement is needed.
Do you service extinguishers on-site?
Yes. All inspections, maintenance, and recharging are performed at your location. We carry the equipment on our service truck to handle everything in the field. This keeps your business protected throughout the service visit with no gap in coverage.
